Name

'Shamash' is the name taken from the Akkadian sun god and the tablet of Shamash, which was found in southern Iraq around 850 BC. The antioxidant skin benefit and the bright nectar colour all came together in inspiring the name choice for this beauty.

Benefits

  • Helps to provide antioxidant benefit to the skin. Refer to composition section for details
  • Assists in balancing the complexion due to the high content of linoleic fatty acids
  • Softens and nourishes the skin
  • Illuminates dull and tired skin. Brings a GLOW to the skin

Skin Type

For all skin types and all ages.

Acne-prone skin types will find that they can also benefit from this facial oil- it contains high amounts of the linoleic fatty acid. It is thought that acne prone skin has a deficiency in linoleic acid. Oils containing a high content of linoleic fatty acid are lightweight and promote skin exfoliation, regulate sebum (oil) production and reduce skin inflammation- all beneficial strategies in acne-prone skin types.

 Colour

Shamash is a bright, sunny, tropical orange from the cold-pressed antioxidant rich oils and organic plant CO2 extracts.

Aroma/Scent

Fruit punch. Tropical. Sweet honeyed fruit with notes of strawberry, guava and papaya.

 Composition

  • 8 cold-pressed plant and fruit oils: 3 organic, 1 upcycled and 2 wild-crafted
    • Milk Thistle Seed Oil, which grows in abundance in Tunisia, is a rich source of antioxidants known as polyphenols. Of importance, is silymarin, which contains flavonolignans. This constituent soothes the skin (anti-inflammatory) and is also a potent antioxidant neutralizing free radicals that are formed when the skin is exposed to UV light.
    • Buriti Seed Oil, a very rich source of beta-carotene – an excellent antioxidant.
    • Strawberry Seed Oil-berries and pomegranate are rich in ellagic acid- an antioxidant. Ellagic acid may be helpful in reducing skin wrinkling and skin inflammation associated with chronic UV exposure.
    • Guava Seed Oil, cultivated in Egypt and reminiscent of my childhood growing up in Saudi Arabia drinking Saudi fruit juice at the weekends. Very rich in linoleic fatty acid and smells incredible.
    • Papaya Seed Oil- the fruit of the papaya is rich in vitamins A, B and C and interestingly has proteolytic enzymes (papain and quimiopapain). These are enzymes that work to gently break down excess skin sebum and dead skin cells. Papaya seed oil has significant antioxidant benefit (due to its tocopherol content) enjoying high levels of alpha-tocopherol in particular.
    • Plum Seed Oil- has a feint marzipan-like aroma and interestingly, unlike other oils, has full-spectrum Vitamin E tocopherols allowing for significant antioxidant activity. It is thought that the plum trees arrived in France from Damascus, sometime in the 13th century and were then cultivated across many parts of the Mediterranean.
    • Passionfruit Seed Oil- contains high amounts of linoleic fatty acid. It also has impressive lycopene and tocopherol content- antioxidants.
    • Pequi Fruit Oil- contains lots of antioxidants and has an impressive essential fatty acid profile. Beautiful emollient to the skin.
  • Organic CO2 extracts
    • Sea Buckthorn Fruit Extract and Carrot Root Extract. These are extracted by carbon dioxide gas which is the gentlest way of making botanical extracts without the use of heat or solvents. They are very concentrated as a result of their full extraction which includes both the water-soluble and oil-soluble substances of the plant.
  • The antioxidant powerhouse- ubiquinone (coenzyme Q10):
    • Coenzyme Q10 (Q10), also known as ubiquinone, is an important coenzyme that is present in all human cells.
    • It functions as an antioxidant, with Q10 levels decreasing in the skin with age. UV rays also have a detrimental effect on the level of Q10 in the skin, rapidly depleting it.
    • Topical treatment of the skin surface with Q10 showed that levels were significantly increased after treatment with Q10‐containing formulas- this shows that Q10 can be delivered directly to the uppermost layer of the skin and that using Q10‐containing formulas to protect and nourish the outermost layer of the skin is desirable for all ages.
